The Old Stone House has also been our spot for exhibiting The New York Nineteenth Century Extravaganza, an event started by Samuel Sobek as a means to bring parts of the historic community together in education and entertainment of the 19th century. In the past this has included a late 19th Century baseball team, lessons on impressionism and the open air painting movement, and historical craft breweries. Presence is the first in a series of four 2020 OSH exhibitions exploring how contemporary artists encourage participation and civic engagement. Each artist group encourages deeper engagement with specific places that support plant life, from the Old Stone House garden to our own windows and backyards, to catalyze individual and collective rejuvenation. The term Regeneration suggests repairing what is lost or damaged, or a process of renewal and growth in organisms or ecosystems that makes them resilient to both natural cycles and events that cause disturbances.

GSS artist Jessica Dalrymple will host a virtual Botanical Drink ‘n’ Draw on Friday, April 24 at 7 pm on Zoom. Today, reconstructed from original stones near the original site, the Old Stone House serves as an interpretive and educational center dedicated to Brooklyn history, as well as a cultural resource for the community. During the Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776, soldiers from the First Maryland Regiment engaged a superior force of British and Hessian soldiers on the land around Claes Vechte's house. This desperate defensive maneuver enabled other American troops to flee across the Gowanus marshes to the safety of Washington’s encampment on Brooklyn Heights.

Located in Washington Park, on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus in Brooklyn, it marks the place where the original Dutch farmstead stood and the culminating engagement of the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn took place. Significant battlefields included Gravesend Bay, and today’s Green-Wood Cemetery, Prospect Park, Fort Greene Park and Fulton Ferry Landing. Our garden spaces offer a natural setting of native plants, creating an outdoor interpretive space and a more healthful environment. The Old Stone House building is a reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte-Cortelyou House on land taken from the Lenape as early as 1639.
Open to the public year-round, Old Stone House features a historic interpretive center with a permanent exhibit about the Battle of Brooklyn. They also host original exhibits connected to Brooklyn’s past and present on the second floor of the house. Every year they educate over six thousand students about the importance of The Battle of Brooklyn and the state of affairs in New York during the colonial era. Along with its education program the Old Stone House also boasts of a newly created playground that incorporates the old garden sitting behind the house. Today the Old Stone House Historic Interpretive Center is operated by the Old Stone House of Brooklyn (OSH), a not-for-profit corporation, under license from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. In addition to an exhibit on the battle, OSH offers a full program of school visits on subjects related to the history of the house and the battle and an extensive schedules of concerts, readings, lectures and other events.
The Marylanders’ sacrifice became legend—a storied moment in a long war. It also served as a club house for a winter skating team,[7] and then for the professional baseball team called the Brooklyn Superbas, which would later be known as the Brooklyn Dodgers before their move to Ebbets Field. The Old Stone House sits on the site of the original Washington Park, and across Fourth Avenue from the second Washington Park, two of the oldest professional baseball stadiums in New York. The left-center field wall from the second Washington Park is still visible on Third Avenue between First and Third Streets. After the death of his wife, Jacques Cortelyou sold the property to Edwin Litchfield, a railroad developer, in 1852.[7] Litchfield lived in Litchfield Villa, now the Brooklyn headquarters of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. OSH is located at 336 Third Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues and 3rd and 4th Streets in Brooklyn, New York.
He is responsible for the creation and installation of the student artwork banners on the façade of MS 51 and has worked with the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District to create lamp post banners. Originally built by Claes Vechte in 1699, this reconstructed house, with its solid stone walls and high brick gables, is a landmark in American military and sports history. Today it is the center of a vibrant, diverse community of engaged citizens. The Old Stone House is situated at the center of Washington Park/JJ Byrne Playground, a 3.5 acre recreation site. We are devoted to supporting the Friends of Washington Park, and developing programming that enriches the site. Our beautiful playground has separate playspaces for toddlers, elementary and middle-school aged children.
She has received a Franklin Furnace Fund and a Rema Hort Mann Artist Community Engagement Grant. Khoshbin received an MA from New York University in Tisch School of the Arts and a BA in Film and Media Studies at University of Texas at Austin. She has collaborated with Laurie Anderson, Karen Finley, House of Trees, Tina Barney, and poets Anne Carson and Bob Currie among others. He has been part of the Park Slope community as the visual art teacher at MS 51 for the past 24 years.
Haskell, Suzy Kopf and Jessica Dalrymple respond to growth and death in the Old Stone House garden. Inspired by visits the artists made to the garden in summer and fall of 2019, a series of new mixed media pieces represent the artists’ first time merging their signature styles together to make a body of work. They ask viewers to contemplate all aspects of the flora of an urban garden, including the high season of full color and bloom as well as the low season where the potential for rebirth resides below ground. In high contrast to the surrounding neighborhood, OSH and its grounds harken back to an older Brooklyn where people subsisted, at least in part, on food they could grow and forage themselves. During this time of social distancing, the public can experience in-progress images of the new work online, and virtual workshops with the artists.
Together, these and other artworks investigate complex topics such as gentrification and environmental justice and experiment with creative ways to engage with and care for local communities, even with current social distancing measures. Many of the projects include online or outdoor components that can be experienced by a wide audience. We invite the public to submit photos of their own Brooklyn Utopias with the hashtag #BrooklynUtopias2020 and by tagging @oldstonehousebklyn. A common stop on the history trail for school field trips, the Old Stone House is home to one of the most thorough and informative exhibitions about New York's role in the Revolution in the city.
The title “No More Water” also implies our current climate emergency (characterized by increased floods, wildfires, and water contamination) and an urgent call for action. Against Doom TV is an interactive variety show bringing together artists, organizers, and candidates to make dismantling harmful systems and imagining the future we want more fun and radical. Artists Amy Khoshbin and Macon Reed explore the potential of collaborative performative and video practices to promote both activism and healing during this tumultuous time leading up to and in the aftermath of the 2020 election. Flipping the script on the drudgery of online platforms and passive TV watching, they tap into the history of artists using the absurd and play.

The Old Stone House is a replica, using some unearthed original materials, of a Dutch stone farmhouse originally built adjacent to the current site by the Dutch immigrant Claes Arentson Vechte in 1699. The Vechte family farmed the lands around the house, harvested oysters in the Gowanus Creek and ferried their produce down the creek to the Gowanus Bay and thence to lower Manhattan. The farmhouse built of brick and stone is the site of the present day J.J.
This program was supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with City Councilmember David Greenfield. In keeping with OSH’s mission to make local history relevant, Presence is comprised mainly of works rooted in Grullón’s native New York City and that address such topics as gentrification, immigration and community preservation. Several works on view were inspired by OSH itself and its Dutch Colonial and Revolutionary War past. OSH scholars and educators are happy to lead Battle of Brooklyn walking, bike or bus tours for interested groups or individuals. However, the British failed to capture Washington and his army, which withdrew across the East River to fight again and, eventually, win the war.

We are accessible by the R (Union Street) and F (4th Avenue) trains, as well as the B63 bus. After an an interactive discussion about food preservation, textile production, and other typical household chores, students rotate through play stations that highlight wool production, weaving and traditional European and African games. Like many of their neighbors, the Vechtes enslaved generations of people of African descent. They did most of the cooking and cleaning and kept the hearth fires going through long cold nights. When the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, more enslaved people lived at the Old Stone House than free.
Appropriating Revolution (
Washington and his army, however, weren’t captured and withdrew across the East River to continue to fight, and eventually, win the war. The two-story house, which looks like the backdrop of a Bruegel painting, is open on weekends. Any other evidence that there was a clash here involving more than 30,000 British and 10,000 American troops is hard to find. According to David McCullough’s historical best seller “1776,” 1,300 Americans were killed or captured. Icons in their Own Right seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride. Makeba Rainey’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness.

When people remember the beginning of the American Revolution, they usually think of the “shot heard ‘round the world,” fired in 1775 in Concord, Massachusetts, or the bloody battle at Bunker Hill. But America’s path to independence really began in August of 1776 with the Battle of Brooklyn, the first military engagement following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. For neighborhood families, we run after-school, winter break and summer programs. The current structure is a 1933 reconstruction, using some original materials, of the Vechte–Cortelyou House, which was destroyed in 1897. The original house was an important part of the 1776 Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War. Because of the interactive nature of our exhibit, face masks are required for all visitors over age 2 at all times during your visit to the Old Stone House.
About the Museum
We also host original exhibits connected to Brooklyn’s past and present in our second floor Great Room. Located in the heart of Park Slope, the Old Stone House is a perfect place to experience Brooklyn’s past while enjoying one of its most vibrant public spaces. The Battle of Brooklyn exhibit, the public restrooms and the recreation spaces are all wheelchair accessible.The Battle of Brooklyn was the first and largest battle of the American Revolution and the first official battle fought by the United States Army. Our permanent exhibit delves into the Battle, from the tense buildup through its dramatic climax. Informative for everyone from families to those with a deeper interest in the Revolutionary War, the exhibit features period weapons and clothes, as well as documents and artifacts that bring the fateful events of August 1776 to life.
We are also the conservancy organization for JJ Byrne Playground and Washington Park – caring for our neighborhood park, playground and gardens to create a vibrant public space. The Old Stone House & Washington Park is dedicated to preserving and teaching local and national history as it has impacted our historically significant Brooklyn neighborhood. On August 27, 1776, the house was an important location in the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War - the first major engagement of the Continental Army after the Declaration of Independence, and the largest battle of the entire war. The Old Stone House is currently open for walk in visitation for up to 10 people at a time, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Noon-4 pm. If we have 10 visitors when you arrive, please wait to enter the museum.
European settlers began purchasing land near the Gowanus from the leaders of Marechkawick and other Lenape towns in 1636. When Dutch West India Company Director Wilhelm Kieft ordered attacks on unarmed Indigenous visitors at Pavonia and Corlears Hook in February 1643, Marechkawick and other Lenape forced the Europeans back onto Manhattan. Two and half years later, in August 1645, European troops retook the area. With “Kieft’s War” over, these settlers founded Breukelen in March 1646 on top of Marechkawick. In TRANSITion (2013) brought together 19 artists and arts groups responding to differing visions of ideal urban transportation systems or proposing their own. Gowanus Public Art Initiative presented several eleven-month-long public art installations in the Gowanus neighborhood.

The Old Stone House was across the street from Washington Park, one of the oldest professional-baseball stadiums in New York. A wall from Washington Park is still visible on Third Avenue between First and Third Streets. Litchfield was the major landowner of the farmland in the area at that time and sold much of his land to the city for the creation of Prospect Park.
Using simple and accessible materials, working with a consistent palette of unapologetically bright colors, which allow the inconsistencies of her hand to show. Her work has been exhibited in New York at venues such as PULSE NYC Special Projects, BRIC Media Arts, ABC No Rio, and Abrons Art Center. Nationally, at San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), and Every Woman Biennial (Los Angeles). Reed completed her MFA at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a University Fellow in 2013 and received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. She has completed many residencies and fellowship programs including at the Royal Academy of Arts (London), Eyebeam Center for Art+Technology, A.I.R. gallery, Amherst College, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her work has received mention in The New York Times, Hyperallergic, Artnet News, Huffington Post, ArtFCity, The Washington Post, The Village Voice, BK Reader, The Gothamist, Art F City, Huffington Post, Arte TV France, and Arte TV Germany, among others.
Each year, 7,000 students visit the Old Stone House to learn about the Battle of Brooklyn and colonial life. Before Belos can deliver the final blow, he is stopped by the Collector and she and the others watch in stock as Belos is flattened against the wall. As the Collector approaches them, King appears and convinces him to stop the Draining Spell. After he does so, the Collector insists they play "owl house" and begins to deconstruct the skull. As her friends cross through the portal to the Human Realm, Luz insists she stay behind to help to take care of the Collector, however, King insists she go and, after thanking her for being his big sister, he blasts her and her friends through the portal.

The real creature arrives and eats Snaggleback and begins to chase King, who fleeing is led by Luz hides in Eda's room so the beast can't find her and is soon joined by King, who informs her the Snaggleback is not the monster. There, King sees a piece of a tag that was missing from the elixir that Luz was going to drink, and upon joining the pieces together they discover that the elixir was to "keep the curse at bay", thus discovering that Eda is in fact the beast, and in turn that it has a curse. King feels ashamed for believing that the elixir was for magic and making Eda turn into a beast for trying to get Luz interested in demons as he has no friends. King, noticing that Eda's eyes have turned black, remembers that those kinds of demons are sensitive to light, meaning they can use it to their advantage.
Powers and abilities
After Hunter tries confronting Inner Belos about all the lies that he had been told over the years, it's then revealed that Hunter is a Grimwalker before he gets pulled into the ground. Luz tosses her jacket at Hunter for him to grab on, but he's still dragged down. Not much later, after Belos reveals not only that he's a witch hunter, but also Philip Wittebane, Hunter summons some vines and an ice pillar to stop Luz from being killed. Shortly after hurting Inner Belos and fleeing, they are brought out of the mindscape by Eda. Hunter then starts having a panic attack, realizing that Belos knows what happened and that he can't go back.
Magic
When Belos agrees to the terms, Luz offers to shake his hand in order to seal the deal. However, as soon as it happens, it's revealed that Luz used an invisibility glyph to hide a branding glove she had been wearing, branding Belos with his own sigil. Luz tells him that he'll never make it out unless he stops the Draining Spell. However, Belos then transforms into his monster form and starts attacking her. During the fight, Belos tells her that they don't belong there, with Luz responding that she's nothing like him. Furious at her defiance of his bigotry, Belos then tries to attack Luz once again before being stopped by King, Willow, Gus, Amity, and Hunter, who join her in attempting him.
Hexside students
These experiences resulted in Luz becoming fearful of interacting with other teenagers. Likewise, their size is also not fixed when drawn, and a witch can either condense it or enlarge it to a different within only a couple seconds after being drawn before it is cast, seemingly without any additional gestures. In the episode "Echoes of the Past", King is revealed to not be the king of demons.
However, Vee states that they are not the same since, unlike her, Luz had a good life and a mother who loves her, yet she still chose to run away, while Vee never had a choice at all, unaware of the circumstances that drove Luz to do so. However, Vee also reveals that while she resents Luz for running away from a good life, Vee is also thankful that she was able to get a fresh start out of it, an issue Vee admits she feels complicated about. Later, after being rescued from the curator by Camila, Luz is glad that she's okay and Vee thanks Luz for her help. Later, when Eda and King manage to get an upset Hooty away long enough for the two of them to be alone, Luz tells Amity that she had been wanting the perfect situation to ask Amity something and that she thinks Amity would be too cool for the Tunnel of Love. After Amity admits that she's not as cool as Luz thinks, Luz then tells Amity that even though her life is hectic at the moment, and she doesn't know what the future might hold, she thinks it'll be cool if Amity was part of her future.

Witches can cast multiple iterations of a spell by creating a single spell circle then slapping it with the palm of the hand. The witch then sweeps their hand which creates multiple identical spell circles. After Luz returns as a human-titan fusion and defeats Belos while the Collector saves the Archives, the two of them pinky swear to each keep doing their best. The Collector decides to return to the stars for some growth and soul searching, but not before gifting Luz a portal door so she can come and go between realms whenever she pleases. Four years later, he gifts Luz with a spectacular display of shooting stars for her belated quinceañera, showing how their friendship is still going strong even after all the time that has passed.
Early life
Suspicious of Luz, Amity attempts to expose Luz to the point of convincing Principal Bump to dissect her. Since then, the two are almost always at odds due to Amity's snobbish—and rather standoffish—behavior, despite Luz's attempts to make amends. Like many witches, Amity has a low opinion of humans, believing they are incapable of performing magic, until Luz shows her an alternative method of spell-casting. It is shown in "Lost in Language" that Luz doesn't mean any ill-will towards Amity, and tries to make peace with her many times. Amity seems to acknowledge her attitudes towards Luz beforehand, and at least promises to think on them after Luz apologizes for reading her diary and lets her borrow her fifth Azura book. It is shown in "Adventures in the Elements" that Luz and Amity have become closer, with Amity putting in the effort to be friendlier.

At first, King was greatly annoyed by this, but would slowly warm up to it. Because of this, Luz sometimes has trouble taking him seriously, but when they both have to fend for themselves in "The Intruder", she gained a new appreciation for King when he opened up about feeling like a nobody, just like her. Luz is protective of King, being quick to call out Amity for insulting him during the events of "Covention". King also acts as a confidant of sorts to Luz as she will voice her concerns to him whenever she is too nervous to tell Eda something.
After deciding they should go to the Archive House, the group is spotted by Skara, Barcus, and Mattholomule. After enlisting the help of Emira and Edric, the twins give Amity their Concealment Stones, albeit reluctantly on Edric's part. As Luz watches Amity fight, she gets another notification about that day's events and, to distract herself, signs up for the brawl as well. As Emira says she needs silence to tend to Amity's injury, Luz walks off and finds the abomaton. When Amity comes over, she lies about not setting off the alarm and they return to the brawl. As Amity is about to face Warden Wrath in the finals, Amity's father arrives and reveals he was alerted to her ditching tryouts.

After hearing a scream, the two run back to the arena, where they find a mutated Warden Wrath and they work to stop him. After he is reverted back to normal, Luz and Amity return to the cliff, where they tie flowers to a balloon made of abomination goo and set it loose, watching as it flies into the sunset. As Luz is watching entries, she is late for Lilith's party in the living room for her new job as museum curator. After the party, she watches an entry where Philip mentions someone named "the Collector". After learning about time pools from Eda, Luz gets help from Lilith to try and find them.
In season three, Luz eventually returns to the Boiling Isles alongside her friends and mother. She finally gains a palisman in the form of a "snake shifter" which she names Stringbean.[17] After reuniting with Eda and King, she also shows compassion towards the Collector, befriending him and learning King's parent, the Titan, has been aiding her through her glyph magic. When Belos possesses the Titan's heart and attempts to kill everyone on the Isles, Luz sacrifices herself to save the Collector's life. After meeting the Titan's spirit in the In-Between Realm, Luz is temporarily given the last of his power, which revives her and allows her to defeat and destroy Belos with help from Eda, King, and Raine Whispers. Afterward, Luz is able to live with her friends and family in both the Human and Demon Realms, after the Collector creates a new, permanent portal door for her.
Since glyphs draw magic from the environment, they are ineffective in the Human Realm where there is no magic. However, Luz discovers that glyphs are specifically powered by the Titan itself, and being within range of Titan's Blood, even at a distance, can allow one to perform glyph magic in the human realm. Also, when I Titan fully passes away, the power behind the glyphs dies with them, rendering them powerless. Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus are three of Luz's friends and classmates at Hexside, being the first students she befriended following her enrollment.
